The Garden Room
The Garden Room is a local community gardening project, rooted in the life of Holy Trinity Ashby.
What we do
We grow and give away flowers to bring joy to people in our community.
A small team of volunteers and helpers grow flowers together on two plots in Ashby: a small secret garden behind Holy Trinity church (off Kilwardby Street) and a plot of raised beds at Ashby Allotments (off Wilfred Gardens), where we have a partnership with Ashby Allotment Association.
Our growing spaces contain a mixture of annual and perennial flowers and foliage that we use to create our signature jam jar bouquets. Alongside the flowers, we grow a small quantity of fresh fruit and veg to share and give away to others.
We garden together for an hour once or twice a week (Monday and Wednesday afternoons 1:30-2:30pm) as the seasons, the weather and the availability of helpers allows. We work together for around 45 minutes, then have a chat over a cup of tea.
There is no rota - and no fixed regular commitment - which means our regular volunteers and occasional helpers just come along and help when they can.
In addition to our Monday and Wednesday gardening sessions, other folk help out on the plots by watering our flowers in the evenings, or help at occasional weekend work parties.
We also run a series of Saturday morning community events at Holy Trinity through the year.
These include an annual community seed swap in the spring, seasonal plant sales, and a series of 'fun with flowers' events in the summer, where people can have fun creating jam jar bouquets: recycled glass jam jars full of beautiful flowers.
We invite people to take our flowers home to enjoy - and make an extra jar or two to give away, to bring joy to others.
Why we do it
We love growing flowers and giving them away - and welcoming people to join us. As volunteers, we get to enjoy the benefits too.
People sometimes say that "Gardening is good for the soul..." - and there is growing evidence that gardening can help improve both physical and mental health.
Whilst we don't actively promote The Garden Room as a 'gardening for wellbeing' project, our activities neatly encompass the widely recognised 'Five Ways to Wellbeing': Connecting with others, Being Active, Learning new skills, Taking Notice of the world around us - and Giving to others.
In a world that needs more beauty, we gather ordinary, extraordinary people to grow something beautiful together.
